スティーブ・シャピロ（Steve Schapiro, 1934 - 2022)は、ニューヨーク市ブルックリン生まれ。アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソンに憧れて写真家を志し、ウィリアム・ユージン・スミスから写真技術や取り組み姿勢を学びました。
1961年にフリーランスの写真家として活動を開始。1960年代のアメリカの政治、文化、社会の大変動のドキュメントに取り組みます。また、ロバート・F・ケネディの大統領選挙キャンペーンに同行し、公民権運動の重要な瞬間を撮影。彼の写真は、「LIFE」、「Vanity Fair」、「Sports Illustrated」、「Newsweek」、「TIME」、「Paris Match」などの雑誌に掲載されています。
1974年、シャピロはロサンゼルスでデヴィッド・ボウイと濃厚なフォトセッションを行っています。この日の二人のコラボレーションの成果は、アルバム「Station to Station(1976年)」、「Low(1977年)」、「Nothing has changed(2014年)」のジャケットや、雑誌「People」、「Rolling Stone」のカバーに生かされることになります。
有名人のポートレートや映画関連の写真でも知られおり、特にフランシス・フォード・コッポラ監督の「The Godfather(1972年)」や、マーティン・スコセッシ監督の「Taxi Driver(1976年)」のスチール写真が有名です。

Steve Schapiro (1934 - 2022) was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1934.
He began his career as a freelance photographer in 1961, documenting the political, cultural, and social upheavals of the 1960s in the United States.
He also accompanied Robert F. Kennedy on his presidential campaign, photographing key moments in the civil rights movement. His photographs have appeared in Life, Vanity Fair, Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, Time, and Paris Match, among others.
In 1974, Shapiro had an intense photo session with David Bowie in Los Angeles. The results of their collaboration on this occasion were used on the covers of the albums Station to Station (1976), Low (1977), and Nothing has changed (2014), as well as on the covers of People magazine and Rolling Stone magazine. He is also known for his portraits of celebrities and film-related photography, most notably stills from Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather" (1972) and Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" (1976).
His photography books include AMERICAN EDGE (Arena edition, 2000), Then and Now (Hatje Cantz, 2012), BOWIE (powerHouse Book, 2016) and Seventy Thirty (Damiani Editore, 2022).
Shapiro's photographs are acclaimed for documenting key moments in contemporary American history from a personal perspective.
