鋤田 正義（Masayoshi Sukita, 1938-）は福岡県直方市生まれ。日本写真映像専門学校卒業後、棚橋紫水に師事します。大広、デルタモンドを経て、1970年からフリーとして活躍しています。特にデヴィッド・ボウイ（1947 - 2016）と深い親交があり、彼を約40年以上にわたり撮り続けたことでも知られています。
70年代のはじめ、鋤田は気鋭の若者文化や音楽に惹かれニューヨークやロンドンを訪れます。1972年の夏にT・レックスのマーク・ボランやデヴィッド・ボウイを撮影。以降、特にボウイと深い信頼関係を築き、彼を約40年以上にわたり撮り続けました。代表作にアルバム「ヒーローズ」(1977年)のカバー作品があります。
鋤田のボウイのイメージは、2013年にスタートしたヴィクトリア & アルバート美術館企画で、世界中で約200万人の観客を動員した「DAVID BOWIE is」展でも特集されました。その他、ドキュメンタリー、ファッション、広告、映画、音楽まで幅広い分野で撮影を行っています。
近年は、海外主要都市で写真展開催が相次いでいます。特にイタリアでの人気が高く、ラスペツィア(2016年)、バーリ(2017年)、フィレンツェ(2019年)、サレルノ(2020年)、パレルモ(2020-2021年)などで大規模な美術館展を相次いで開催しました。ドイツのベルリンでは2017年にボウイ「ヒーローズ」のLPリリース40周年記念写真展を開催。2019年には、オーストラリアのシドニーで開催された写真に特化したアートフェアー「Head On Photo Festival」に招待作家として参加しています。
日本での近年の美術館展は、鋤田正義写真展「ただいま。」（2018年、直方谷尾美術館）、「鋤田正義写真展 in 大分 2019」（ 2019年、大分市アートプラザ）、「時間～TIME 鋤田正義写真展」（2021年、美術館「えき」KYOTO）等。2018年、鋤田の軌跡をたどるドキュメンタリー映画「SUKITA 刻まれたアーティストたちの一瞬」が公開。2021年、待望の回顧写真集「SUKITA : ETERNITY」がACC ART BOOKSと玄光社から世界同時発売。2022年９月（日本では2023年３月）に劇場公開された、ブレット・モーゲン監督によるデヴィッド・ボウイの長編ドキュメンタリー映画「ムーンエイジ・デイドリーム」のポスターに鋤田によるボウイ作品が採用。
回顧写真集をはじめとする近年の活躍により、鋤田のキャリアの本格的再評価がはじまっています。

Masayoshi Sukita (1938-) was born in Nogata City, Fukuoka Prefecture. After graduating from the Japan College of Photography and Imaging Arts, he studied under Shisui Tanahashi. After working for Daiko and Delta Mondo, he began his freelance career in 1970.
In the early 1970s, Sukita was drawn to up-and-coming youth culture and music, and visited New York and London,
where he photographed T. Rex's Marc Bolan and David Bowie in the summer of 1972.
Since then, he developed a deep relationship of trust with Bowie in particular,
and continued to photograph him for over 40 years. One of his best-known works is the cover piece for the album "Heroes" (1977).
Sukita's Bowie images were also featured in the "DAVID BOWIE is" exhibition, a Victoria & Albert Museum project
that started in 2013 and attracted about 2 million visitors worldwide.
In addition, he has photographed in a wide range of other fields, including documentary, fashion, advertising, film, and music.
In recent years, a series of photo exhibitions have been held in major overseas cities.
His work is particularly popular in Italy, where he has held a series of large-scale museum exhibitions in Laspezia (2016), Bari (2017), Florence (2019), Salerno (2020), Palermo (2020-2021), and other cities. In Berlin, Germany, he held a photography exhibition in 2017 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Bowie's "Heroes" LP. In 2019, he was an invited artist to the Head On Photo Festival, an art fair dedicated to photography in Sydney, Australia.
In Japan, in 2018, Masayoshi Sukita's photo exhibition "I'm home." was held at the local Nogata Tanio Museum of Art; "Masayoshi Sukita Photo Exhibition in Oita 2019" in 2019; and "TIME: Masayoshi Sukita Photo Exhibition" at the Museum「EKi」KYOTO in 2021.
In 2018, the first documentary film "SUKITA" was released, tracing the path of Sukita.
In 2021, the long-awaited retrospective photo book "SUKITA:ETERNITY" was released simultaneously worldwide by ACC Art Books in the UK/ Genkosha in Japan. A full-scale reevaluation of his career has begun.
